2015 Basket of Joy a Success!

On Saturday, December 12, 2015 more than 500 volunteers helped assemble and deliver more than 5,280 gift baskets to home-bound and isolated seniors in our community. The recipients were nominated from others who felt they may need a little joy during the holiday season. Co-founded in 1983 by Denver Post columnist Woody Paige, the Basket of Joy program continues to bring joy each year with these gift baskets filled with fresh fruit, candy and a handmade card from a Denver-area school child. Woody joined The Denver Post ACTS (Assisting The Community Through Service) employee volunteers and can be seen in a photo in the Thank You section below.

Basket of Joy is produced in partnership with Volunteers of America, Albertsons, Safeway, Denver Mattress Company, InnovAge, and Anadarko. In the photo above, Ron DeVries, Center Director from InnovAge delivers a basket to a happy recipient in Aurora.

Emily Griffith is Turning 100!

To celebrate its milestone, the Emily Griffith Foundation and the Emily Griffith Technical College are presenting a yearlong community celebration, “Opening Doors of Opportunity for 100 Years.” They have planned an engaging array of events over the coming year and invite everyone to join in the celebration.

Emily Griffith opened the nation’s first public adult vocational school in Denver in 1916. Her philosophy was simple, “to provide the opportunity for all who wished to learn.” The Opportunity School literally opened doors for adults of all ages and races to learn new skills, and chart their course to vastly improved lives.

Join Denver Post Community and help celebrate Emily’s life and legacy at The Party of The Century, a speakeasy themed party on Friday, February 12, at History Colorado Center. Curious Theater will perform a theatrical play covering her life and legacy.

Season To Share 2015/16 Campaign Ends Jan. 31

The 2015/2016 Season To Share campaign is coming to a close but there are still a couple days left to be one of the many donors making a huge impact in our community! Each donation given will be generously matched at 50% by the McCormick Foundation.

Season To Share is the primary fundraising campaign for Denver Post Charities. The 2014/15 Season To Share campaign raised over $1,550,000 from 5,274 donors. The McCormick Foundation added $780,000 by matching every dollar raised, by fifty cents making a grand total of $2,350,000 available to grant to 53 nonprofit organizations across Metro Denver.

Please make your donation in any amount by Sunday, January 31, 2016 to help make the 2015/16 campaign another great success for our community!

On Saturday, November 21, more than 50 Denver Post employees, with their family and friends, volunteered at Food Bank of The Rockies. Over 11,000 pounds of food was reclaimed and 987 boxes of family meals were packed in the 4 hours of service. Thank you to everyone who gave their time to better our community!

Thank You Trans-Siberian Orchestra

On Saturday, November 21, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra presented a check prior to their performance at the Pepsi Center, to The Denver Post Community Foundation in support of Basket of Joy, our program produced in partnership with Volunteers of America. This donation will help enrich the lives of more than 5,000 home-bound and isolated seniors in our community with a Basket of Joy this holiday season. Bonfils Blood Center Drive For Life 18

On Tuesday, October 6, 2015, Colorado blood donors exceeded the goal Bonfils Blood Center set for this year’s Drive For Life presented by Bonfils and the Denver Broncos. More than 1,100 blood donations were collected at Sports Authority Field, having the potential to save up to 4,700 lives.

Over 2,350 people attended Colorado’s largest single-day blood drive and were able to take part in the festivities, which included mingling with Denver Broncos players, alumni players, cheerleaders and Miles, the Broncos mascot. We were proud to support this important, life-saving event for our community.

Pen & Podium Book Club Begins

On Beauty, by Zadie Smith was the topic of discussion for the first Denver Post Pen & Podium Book Club of 2015 on Monday, Sept. 21 at the beautiful William Barrows Mansion and offices of CADA – Colorado Automobile Dealers Association.

The Pen & Podium Book Club started 5 years ago to compliment the Pen & Podium Series and to bring together like-minded literary enthusiasts to discuss a piece of work by each author before their lecture.

We are so fortunate and thankful to have these entertaining evenings moderated by Jeffrey Neuman, Jill Scott Conklin, BethAnn Goodwill, and Gail Armstrong.

Pedal The Plains Tours Eastern CO

The 4th annual Denver Post Pedal The Plains bicycle tour concluded on Sunday, September 20 with nearly 1,000 riders crossing the finish line in Julesburg, CO. The host communities of Julesburg, Holyoke and Sterling were the epitome of hospitable hosts, providing entertainment, art, education and amazing home grown food over the weekend.

Produced in partnership with the Governor’s office, this 3 day cycling event provides a unique opportunity to experience the beauty and hospitality of the plains…on a bicycle! A highlight for the cyclists are the many points of interest and education stops along the route ranging from historic museums and landmarks, to family farms and wildlife exhibits.

Pedal The Plains and The Denver Post Community Foundation, in partnership with Wells Fargo were proud to present charity grants to the Colorado FFA Foundation and Colorado 4H for their efforts, and Pedal The Plains presented additional grants to the towns of Julesburg, Holyoke and Sterling.
