Congratulations to Angelina Holm – the 2019 Champion of The Denver Post Colorado State Spelling Bee

On Saturday, March 16, 2019, more than 280 of the State’s top 2nd – 8th grade spellers participated in The 79th Annual Colorado State Spelling Bee at the University of Denver’s Sturm Hall.

The morning consisted of local and regional bee winners taking a written spelling and vocabulary test to see who would advance to the afternoon oral competition. The top 29 scorers made it to the finals with Angelina Holm, a 7th grader from Denver School of the Arts, winning the competition in round 25 after spelling heliacal correctly. This is Angelina’s second year in a row to walk away as The Denver Post Colorado State Spelling Bee Champion. She will go on to represent Colorado in the Scripps National Spelling Bee near Washington, D.C. in May. Second place in Saturday’s Bee went to Ben Holland, a 7th grader at Hamilton Middle School, a repeat for him from 2018 as well, and third place went to Lachlan Flanigan, a 5th grader from Cory Elementary.

Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard to earn a spot on Saturday. Please join us in wishing Angelina good luck in the National Bee, we are proud of you, Angelina!

Congratulations to Reach Out and Read Colorado

On Monday, November 12, 2018, The Denver Post Pen & Podium Literary Series welcomed bestselling author, Amor Towles to the stage. Prior to his lecture, Mr. Towles joined The Denver Post Community Foundation in presenting a $5,000 grant to Reach Out and Read Colorado, a nonprofit organization that works to give young people a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together, with a special focus on children growing up in poverty.

Congratulations to Colorado FFA Foundation

The Denver Post Community Foundation and The Denver Post Pedal The Plains Bicycle Tour were proud to present a $7,000 grant to the Colorado FFA Foundation on Friday, September 14, 2018 in Bennett, CO. This grant will go towards the Jacket for Everyone program, which helps students all across Colorado have access to an FFA jacket to complete their official dress.

During Pedal The Plains, the Blue Jackets were seen everywhere. FFA members provided the lunches each day and were all along the route ensuring cyclists were having a great time. They ended the PTP Tour handing out medals and cold FFA towels as folks crossed the finish line. The Colorado FFA Foundation State Officers and Don Thorn, Colorado FFA Foundation Executive Director, accepted the check from Deirdre Moynihan, Pedal The Plains Tour Director (not pictured) and Stacy Schafer, Communications and Grants Manager of The Denver Post Community Foundation.

Congratulations to all Pedal The Plains Participants

The Denver Post Pedal The Plains Bicycle Tour 2018 was another great ride. The hospitality from the host communities Kiowa, Bennett, and Limon, was so impressive and appreciated. We are grateful to all the volunteers who gave their time and talents to ensure a great experience to the cyclists. Thank you also to the Colorado FFA Foundation and Colorado 4-H for their hard work over the weekend.

Round 3 is Angelina Holm’s Final Run at the Scripps National Spelling Bee

Angelina Holm, The Denver Post Colorado State Spelling Bee State Champion, did a great job at the National Bee but unfortunately did not earn enough points from her written test plus her two oral words to advance to today’s finals. We are proud of her efforts and dedication and she will always be the 2018 Denver Post Colorado State Champion! Angelina won as a 6th grader, so we have no doubt we will see this smart young lady again.

Sixteen of the 42 finalists were RSVBees which means they paid an entry fee to participate in the National Bee. This is the first year the Scripps National Spelling Bee has offered this option to spellers, who were either local school champs or past National Spelling Bee participants. Three are from Colorado. You can watch the Finals part 1 on ESPN2 today starting at 8:30 a.m. MST and then Finals part 2 which airs live on ESPN starting at 6:30 p.m. MST.
