The Colorado State Spelling Bee Has Been Canceled

The Denver Post Colorado State Spelling Bee Has Been Canceled

The decision to cancel the 2020 Denver Post Colorado State Spelling Bee came after receiving official notification that Scripps National Spelling Bee canceled the national competition. These cancellations, due to COVID-19 and the ongoing health and safety concerns, came after exhausting all possibilities of hosting virtual competitions.

As we continue to navigate these uncertain times, one thing stands true – we are proud of all the state’s top spellers and think they are all champions.

Teachers and Families: finalist certificates will be mailed to spellers by June 1, 2020. If you would like a refund for your registration fee or any extra lunches purchased, contact event manager, Carol Cline at ccline@denverpost.com by June 15, 2020. If you have questions, you can email us at dpcommunity@denverpost.com.

A note from Paige Kimble, executive director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee:

“Our thoughts immediately go to our spellers and their families. The students have dedicated time and effort to their passion for learning. They should be proud of all they have accomplished by winning spelling bees at the classroom, school and regional level.”

In response to the COVID-19 virus, we want to continue to share the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s suggested preventative measures, click here to stay informed.

The Denver Post Colorado State Spelling Bee

Each year more than 270 top spellers (4th – 8th grade) from across Colorado come together in March at the University of Denver to compete for the title of Colorado State Spelling Bee Champion. This 80 year old tradition, originally sponsored by the Rocky Mountain News, encourages and rewards our young people’s love of learning and competition. The winner of the Colorado State Spelling Bee moves on to represent Colorado in the Scripps National Spelling Bee which is televised live on ESPN and is held near Washington D.C.
