Season To Share – Make Your Gifts Go Further This Holiday Season

The Denver Post Season To Share Holiday Campaign is underway! We are so grateful to our generous community for helping support those who need it most. Each donation given will be matched at 50% by the McCormick Foundation. 
Through The Denver Post Season To Share, a McCormick Foundation Fund, grants are made to local nonprofit organizations making a difference for low-income children, adults and families. These qualified nonprofits provide life-changing programs that offer year-round education and mentoring; give access to healthy meals and food supplies; provide stable and affordable housing and offer access to free or low-cost dental and medical services.
Thanks to the generosity of donors and the 50% match from the McCormick Foundation, those less fortunate in our communities have a chance to improve their lives. With all expenses paid, 100% of donations, plus the match, is granted across Metro Denver.
In the 2015/16 campaign, over 4,950 donors plus the generous match by the McCormick Foundation provided $2,290,000 in grants to 49 nonprofit agencies including four new signature grants for $100,000 each.

The Denver Post ACTS – Employees Give Back

On Saturday, November 12, 33 Denver Post ACTS (Assisting the Community Through Service) employee volunteers, with their family and friends, spent their morning volunteering at Food Bank of the Rockies. All in all a total of 102.5 hours of community service was spent helping make our community a better place. The group processed over 12,240 lbs of food and created 10,240 meals!

Thank You Trans-Siberian Orchestra!

On Saturday, November 19 the Trans-Siberian Orchestra presented a generous $16,282.00 check to The Denver Post Community Foundation in support of Basket of Joy, our program produced in partnership with Volunteers of America and Safeway and sponsored by Denver Mattress and InnovAge.
This donation will help enrich the lives of more than 5,280 home-bound and isolated seniors in our community by providing a basket of fruit this holiday season. Pictured with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra performers are Denise Plante, KOSI 101.1; Tracy Ulmer and Carol Cline, Denver Post Community Foundation; and Jim White, Volunteers of America. 3rd Annual Singleton Legacy Grant Awarded to Colorado FFA Foundation

$50,000 grant will support Supervised Agricultural Innovation Grant program  
The Denver Post Community Foundation presented its 3rd Annual Dean Singleton Legacy Grant to the Colorado FFA Foundation on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016. This year’s grant will assist FFA students to start or enhance an enterprise through a supervised and mentored program. By providing grants to students, they can explore areas of agriculture of interest to them as well as look at innovative projects and practices or niche markets. Students will apply in the fall for scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 and if selected, will work with their agricultural education instructor as well as community mentor to develop and grow their project.
“The Colorado FFA Foundation is near and dear to my heart. I am so proud that The Denver Post Community Foundation is able to support the Supervised Agricultural Innovation Grant program this year,” said Dean Singleton, the Legacy Grant namesake. “The work being done by FFA students is so important to our community and this grant will help encourage new and improved ideas. I was honored to be an FFA member in my younger days and encourage all current and future student members to be proud of the values represented by wearing the blue jacket. I know I am, 50 years later.”
“This grant will be transformational for many students and FFA Chapters across the state. It will provide the needed funding to help students gain experience in innovative entrepreneurship experiences,” said Don Thorn, Executive Director of Colorado FFA Foundation. “This is just what we needed to get this program off the ground. Many thanks to The Denver Post Community Foundation and Dean Singleton for providing us this opportunity.”
The Dean Singleton Legacy Grant is named after William Dean Singleton, who built the nation’s second-largest newspaper company. Dean retired as chairman of MediaNews Group Inc., owner of The Denver Post and sits on the Board of Directors for The Denver Post Community Foundation.

19th Annual Drive For Life Blood Drive to be Held Nov. 1

Broncos Fans Are Just The Right Type    
Every two seconds someone in the United States requires a transfusion of donated blood. 2016 will be the 19th year of Drive for Life, the Denver Broncos Community Blood Drive with Bonfils Blood Center and the largest single-day blood drive in the history of Colorado. Drive for Life will be held at Sports Authority Field at Mile High from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1, 2016. At Drive for Life 18, more than 5,100 lives were saved or enhanced due to the 1,710 donations collected from generous donors throughout the event. The Denver Post Community is proud to support Drive for Life!

John Irving Kicks Off The Denver Post Pen & Podium Series

Award Winning Author Welcomed by Sold-Out Crowd 
On Monday, September 26, the crowd of loyal Pen & Podium subscribers and guests were introduced to John Irving, a self proclaimed “worst case scenario” type of writer. He said “you think that was bad, just wait!” Mr. Irving was genuine, funny, and honest about his writing process and his life story. Prior to the conversation moderated by Jeffrey Neuman, award winning playwrite and Pen & Podium Book Club host, Mr. Irving enjoyed meeting with subscribers and guests of Pen & Podium sponsor, Northwestern Mutual at a VIP Reception on stage. He also spent time getting to know our nonprofit grantee for the evening, Colorado Humanities. It was a great beginning to an exciting Pen & Podium season. Irving will be followed by world renowned authors: Lauren Groff, Anthony Doerr, Mary Karr, and Julia Alvarez.

Celebrating Another Great Finish for Pedal The Plains

“The Ride for the Rest of Us” was Held Sept. 16-18 

The 154 mile, three-day ride took more than 850 cyclists through the southern Colorado towns of Ordway, Fowler, and La Junta for the 5th anniversary of the event. With close to 20 educational stops and signage along the route, the riders were immersed in rural highlights, trivia and fun facts to keep them pedaling down the country roads. During the safety overview came the warning to look out for snakes and tarantulas crossing the highways, two things no cyclist would want to run over! One of the many benefits of taking part in Pedal The Plains is the focus on featuring locally grown ingredients all weekend, honoring the pride and rich culture the plains have to offer.
The Denver Post Pedal The Plains Bicycle Tour is produced in partnership with the Governor’s Office. Governor John Hickenlooper and former Publisher and current Chairman of The Denver Post Dean Singleton dreamt up this event over a discussion on how to showcase the culture and beauty of eastern Colorado. The Governor refers to Pedal The Plains as “The Ride For The Rest of Us,” as a nod towards The Denver Post Ride The Rockies Bicycle Tour through the majestic Rocky Mountains. Each year Pedal The Plains grows in numbers and each year the cyclists are treated to the charm and hospitality from some of the friendliest people in Colorado.

12th Annual Denver Food + Wine Festival

Denver Food + Wine Festival is a multi-day extravaganza of food, wine and spirits events, presented by co-sponsors Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits of Colorado and Colorado Restaurant Association. The 12th annual event benefits four nonprofit partners. The Denver Post Community Foundation is honored to be a beneficiary along with Colorado ProStart, operated by the Colorado Restaurant Foundation, Kroenke Sports Charities, and Metropolitan State University of Denver. Festival events feature the best in Colorado’s restaurants paired with the finest wine and spirits, dinners, tastings, and culminating with the festival’s signature event, The Grand Tasting. Denver Food + Wine Festival aims to highlight hospitality industry impact, promote workforce development, and celebrate Denver as a culinary destination.
