The Denver Post Community Foundation introduced the Dean Singleton Legacy Grant in 2014, awarding its inaugural $50,000 grant to the National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD). Each year the DPCF Board of Directors selects a recipient from a list of deserving nonprofits who continually make a difference in our community and who this grant would make a huge, immediate impact for.
“The Dean Singleton Legacy Grant is an amazing honor for us. He has been on the NSCD board, served as chair and has continued to stay involved in our organization,” said Becky Zimmermann, president and CEO, National Sports Center for the Disabled. “We serve 3,000 people per year in our therapeutic recreation programs but our program fees only cover 15 percent of the program costs, so we rely heavily on grants and donations. This grant will help provide more than 500 lessons in over 15 sports to participants next year.”
William Dean Singleton, who built the nation’s second-largest newspaper company, retired as chairman of MediaNews Group Inc., owner of The Denver Post, in 2013. He currently serves as non-executive chairman of The Post. Singleton, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 27 years ago, served on the NSCD board from 1996-2006 and was chair from 2004 – 2005.
“I can’t think of a more deserving organization to receive this legacy grant. I have seen and experienced firsthand how the NSCD enables participants to learn more about sports and about themselves though therapeutic sports and recreation programs,” Singleton said. “Developing and awarding a legacy grant through the Denver Post Community Foundation has been a dream of mine and now it’s a personal thrill to see it come to fruition. I have been honored to be a part of NSCD for almost 20 years and am pleased that they are the first recipient of this grant.”
